Guidelines for Students and Parents
Revised June 2000
These guidelines are to be distributed to and read by each participant and his/her parent before entering the contest each year.
The purpose of the MMTA Sonata Contest is to encourage excellence in the performance of sonata and sonatina literature, and to provide a yearly goal for which students may strive. Our desire is to encourage and reward all participants at all levels of study.
| Check-in Time: |
10 minutes prior to scheduled performance time. Students must perform in order in which they are pre-registered to be considered for awards. Anyone arriving late will be allowed to perform after the other contestants in his/her group and will receive the judge's evaluation. Performance and waiting rooms are color-coded. Present the student/parent letter you will receive from your teacher to a check-in monitor to expedite the check-in process. Those in levels 20, College and Adult should bring copies of their music with numbered measures; all others do not need music.
|
| Performance: |
Public Audition. Out of consideration for the judge and the contestants, we request that audience members remain in the performance room until all contestants in that level have played. Please do not bring into the performance room babies or very young children who may cause a disturbance. Please be as quiet as possible in the hallways. Flash photography, video taping, and audio taping are prohibited in the performance rooms, but permitted elsewhere. Beepers and cellular phones should be turned to the silent mode in performance rooms. Participants: Please limit warm-up in the performance room to a cadence, scale and/or arpeggio (Approx. 15 seconds). Students who do not abide by this limitation will be disqualified. |
| Criteria: |
We strive to select the most qualified judges possible. Judges are given general guidelines for choosing winners, but they hold the ultimate responsibility of determining specific criteria for awards. All judges decisions are final. Any student or parent confronting or arguing with a judge, contest committee member or MMTA member regarding the judge's decision will result in the student's ineligibility to participate in the following year's contest. Please remember that the true value of this contest is in the preparation of the music and in the performance experience, rather than in the goal of winning an award. |
| Awards: |
Awards will be announced approximately 20 minutes after the completion of the performances in each level. First Place winners receive trophies; Second and Third Place winners receive medallions; Honorable Mention winners receive ribbons. Winners' names will be posted in the main lobby throughout the day. Each participant receives a certificate and the judge's evaluation from his/her teacher at a future lesson. |
