Guidelines for Students and Parents
Revised 2011

printable form

These guidelines are to be distributed to and read by each participant and his/her parent before entering the contest each year.

The purpose of the MMTA Sonata Contest is to encourage excellence in the performance of sonata and sonatina literature, and to provide a yearly goal for which students may strive. Our desire is to encourage and reward all participants at all levels of study.

Check-in Time: 10 minutes prior to scheduled performance time. Students must perform in the order in which they are pre-registered to be considered for awards. Anyone arriving late will be allowed to perform after the other contestants in his/her group and will receive the judge’s evaluation. Performance and waiting rooms are color-coded. Be sure to notice your color listed above. For assistance, ask at information desks. Present this sheet to a check-in monitor to expedite the check-in process. Those in Levels 20, College, and Adult should bring original copies of their music with numbered measures; all others do not need music.
Performance: This is a public audition. Out of consideration for the judge and the contestants, we request that audience members remain in the performance room until all contestants in that level have played. An exception will be made for parents who have children performing simultaneously. These parents will be issued an Entrance Pass following the announcements by their door monitor. This pass will allow them admittance to the next performance room. Any other parents who arrive after the competition has begun will not be admitted to the performance room but will be allowed to listen from outside. Please do not bring into the performance room babies or very young children who may cause a disturbance. Please be as quiet as possible in the hallways. Flash photography, videotaping, and audio taping are prohibited in the performance rooms, but permitted elsewhere.
Warm-up: Students should limit warm-up in the performance room to a cadence, scale, and/or arpeggio (approximately 15 seconds). Students who do not abide by this limitation will be disqualified.
T-shirts: Commemorative T-shirts will be available for purchase at $12.00 (cash or check, no credit cards). Proceeds will help offset the expenses of the contest.

Criteria: We strive to select the most qualified judges possible. Judges are given general guidelines for choosing winners, but they hold the ultimate responsibility of determining specific criteria for awards. All judges’ decisions are final. Any student or parent found confronting a judge, contest committee member or MMTA member regarding a judge’s decision will result in the student’s ineligibility to participate in the following year’s contest. Please remember that the true value of this contest is in the preparation of the music and in the performance experience.
Awards: Awards will be announced approximately 20 minutes after the completion of the performances in each level. First, Second and Third Place winners receive medallions; Honorable Mention winners receive ribbons. Winners’ names will be posted in the main lobby throughout the day. Each participant receives a certificate and the judge’s evaluation from his/her teacher at a future lesson.
Publicity: First place winners are asked to meet on the Sunday following the contest for pictures to be submitted to the newspaper. Detailed information will be given at the awards ceremony.
Pianos: We are fortunate that Dollarhide's has provided pianos for our contest this year. The Mobile Music Teachers Association is proud to sponsor this annual contest and we look forward to a rewarding and exciting day with our young pianists!
